The armbar from guard is one of the most fundamental submissions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, targeting the opponent’s elbow joint by hyperextending it against its natural range of motion. This technique is typically initiated from the closed guard position, where the athlete wraps their legs around the opponent’s waist with their feet locked together. To execute the armbar, the practitioner must first break the opponent’s posture, isolating one arm while leveraging their hips to create an angle. Once the arm is isolated, the practitioner uses their legs to trap the opponent’s head and secure the arm before extending their hips upward to achieve the finish. Common errors include not breaking the opponent’s posture, incorrect leg positioning, allowing too much distance from the opponents shoulder to the attackers hips, and insufficient hip movement. Mastery of the armbar teaches important principles of leverage and positional control.
